Hoy nos vamos a centrar en el pasado de las formas “there is” y “there are”<\/strong>. Como ya sabéis, ambas formas se traducen en español como: hay, es decir, se trata de una forma impersonal del verbo haber en presente. Como ya hemos visto en otra lección anterior, recordemos, de forma general, que utilizamos “there is” seguido de los artículos “a\/an” o el numeral cardinal “one”, cuando nos estamos refiriendo a nombres contables. También lo podemos utilizar con nombres incontables, seguido de “some”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sin embargo, utilizábamos “there are”<\/strong> seguido de “some” o el numeral cardinal correspondiente, cuando nos estamos refiriendo a nombres contables que están en plural. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Aquí podemos ver algunos ejemplos de cómo utilizamos ambas formas:<\/p>\n\n\n\n – There is a book on the table<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Hay un libro encima de la mesa<\/p>\n\n\n\n – There is some milk in the fridge<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Hay algo de leche en la nevera<\/p>\n\n\n\n – There are some dogs in the park<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Hay algunos perros en el parque<\/p>\n\n\n\n – There are three chairs in the room<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Hay tres sillas en la habitación<\/p>\n\n\n\n Una vez recordado esto, pasaremos a introducir las formas “there was” y “there<\/strong>«. <\/p>\n\n\n\n «Were<\/strong>”, que, como ya he mencionado al comienzo de este post, se trata de las formas en pasado simple de “there is”<\/strong> y “there are”<\/strong>. Por lo tanto, en español <\/strong>se traducirían como: había o hubo<\/strong>. Para utilizar una u otra nos centraremos en los mismos criterios que para utilizar su forma en presente (contable\/no contable, singular\/plural<\/strong>). A continuación, os dejo un cuadro con sus diferentes estructuras y ejemplos:<\/p>\n\n\n\n AFIRMATIVO <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Singular<\/strong> There was <\/p>\n\n\n\n Yesterday I arrived late to the office, there was a traffic jam. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Ayer llegué tarde a la oficina, hubo atasco. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Plural <\/strong>There were <\/p>\n\n\n\n There were a lot of interesting books in the library. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Había un montón de libros interesantes en la biblioteca.<\/p>\n\n\n\n NEGATIVO <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Singular<\/strong> There wasn’t <\/p>\n\n\n\n There wasn’t any witness in the case. No había\/hubo ningún testigo en el caso. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Plural <\/strong>There weren’t <\/p>\n\n\n\n There weren’t any tomatoes in the fridge, so, I went to the supermarket. <\/p>\n\n\n\n No había tomates en la nevera, así que fui al supermercado.<\/p>\n\n\n\n INTERROGATIVO <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Singular <\/strong> Was there…? <\/p>\n\n\n\n Was there a man standing next to your door? <\/p>\n\n\n\n ¿Había un hombre junto a tu puerta? <\/p>\n\n\n\n Plural <\/strong>Were there…? <\/p>\n\n\n\n Were there any people in the meeting? <\/p>\n\n\n\n ¿Había\/hubo gente en la reunión?<\/p>\n\n\n\n ¡Eso es todo por hoy!
